Trump Noise is Ruining My Flow
I am addicted to the news; watching and reading endless loops of intrigue about FBI investigations, Russian Links, and Tweets from a President. And all of the noise is ruining my flow. This week I decided to do something drastic. I stopped reading. Anything. Period. For a whole week. And guess what? My mind is filling with ideas, dreams, inspiring thoughts and actions I want to take. My writing is flowing and I am finishing tasks I had let gather dust for months. I have so much more space without the noise of the Trump news cycle. And I don’t even live in America. Since the USA elected President Trump, the world seems to have come to a stand still to watch the show. We seem to all be morbidly fascinated with watching each investigation, firing, tweet, and tantrum. Conversations around a birthday party in rural Holland are even filled with discussion over the latest scandal.
The noise and chatter around what is happening to the seat of the President of the United States is distracting. It fills you and creeps into your thoughts. I was finding myself checking the news as soon as I woke, all throughout the day and last thing before I slept. What is this sad fascination with watching what seems like a never-ending drama series? And how can we stop it?
This week without reading has opened my eyes to how much time and energy this fascination was taking. Fascination should be a good word, we should be following our fascination and learning and growing. This week has given me time to grow my fascination in other things again. I have listened to amazing podcasts by other writers, I have spent more time in my garden, I have sat and talked to my kids and I have written a lot. Moving my attention from the Trump noise has been the best wake up call I have had in a while. While I can’t imagine a life without reading, I can work towards one that has the level of noise turned down a little.
